From the trail kiosk, go right, following Little Elbow Trail southwest along the north bank of the river and up to where it briefly shares the Little Elbow Campground access road. Continue through a gate and small parking lot onto a wide fire road. Continue to Nihahi Creek junction, turn right, and climb 125m through a dry forest of pine and spruce to emerge on a high bench above a deep canyon. Rocks and tree roots require attention as you dip back into the forest on the east side of Nihahi Creek. Eventually you pass the rocky cleft at the top of the canyon and drop down to the winding, gravel-filled river channel. Finally, the valley opens up into a wide gravel plain that continues for many kilometers beyond the official end of the trail. It's easy to spend an entire afternoon enjoying the solitude of this quiet valley and looking for fossils in the bedrock.
