Distance: ~5 km on trail + ??km exploring

This is a fairly short snowshoe trail with some great scenery. We will take the official snowshoe trail and check out some of the side routes. This may involve some trail breaking.

The pace will be moderate - beginners are welcome. Speed demons beware.

Please note that we may be sharing part of these trails with x-country skiers so we need to be careful not mess up their tracks.

Note that this event requires driving several kilometers up the Smith Dorrien Road, which is a gravel road, and can be icy/treacherous. Please keep this in mind when registering for this event and indicating you are willing to drive.

Required Items to Bring:
- snowshoes
- proper clothing for variable weather, layers are best
- hiking boots + gaiters, or winter boots
- rentals are available, if required, at U of C Outdoor Centre.
- snacks and lunch + drinks

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Take Hwy 1 west out of town. Go south on Hwy 40 for approx 56km. Turn right onto the Kananaskis Lakes Trail just before the winter gate. Turn right again onto the Smith Dorrien and drive approx 20 km. The Sawmill Parking Lot is on your right and is well signed. We will be stopping either at Pocaterra Hut or the Visitor Centre before heading up the Smith Dorrien.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $78.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.26, effective Sunday, July 12, 2020). This is based on $0.15/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Note that drivers with large vehicles have the option to adjust this cost based on their vehicles. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual amount among all people in the vehicle and bring some change as drivers are not expected to carry change.
