Itinerary: | |||||||
We will be doing a circumnavigation of Mt
Rundle by way of the Goat Creek Trail from the
Canmore end, through Banff, then returning to
Canmore via the paved Legacy Trail.
The Canmore Hill is a narrow gravel road that sees frequent vehicle traffic and is dusty and unpleasant to ride up, therefore we will be utilizing a group shuttle from downtown Canmore to the trailhead. Later we will use vehicles left in Canmore to retrieve vehicles left at the trailhead. For this reason participants who can drive and who can transport bikes/people will take priority on the event list, possibly over others previously registered. Alternatively the group size may be increased at the coordinators discretion to accommodate additional drivers. Road construction in the Canmore hill may delay our travel if it is still happening. We will also be making a stop for food/refreshments during or more likely afterwards while vehicles are being retrieved. This could extend our event time beyond the posted ride time. The refreshment stop is part of the event and carpooling/retrieving means early departures will not work. Please do not be in a hurry to return to the city or have plans for after the event, or please do not register for this event. Total distance is approx 50km. This consists of about 18km of double track down Goat Creek of an easy to moderate technical nature ending behind the Banff Springs Hotel. Then a few kilometers through Banff to meet up to the Legacy Trail. The Legacy Trail is a paved 3m wide pathway 22km long and has now been extended from the park boundary into Canmore. A couple km of on street riding returns us to the start point in downtown Canmore. Although the riding is probably around 3+ hours, because of shuttling, retrieving, refreshments, and travel time, you can consider this an all day event. Note that the rough surface of Goat Creek means that road bikes, cruisers, and similar bikes are unsuitable for this event. Please contact the coordinator if you need to clarify this point.

This is based on $0.16/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
