*** A rock climbing helmet is required for this scramble. No helmet = no event ***

Distance: 13.5km round trip
Elevation gain: 850m

While Commonwealth Peak is lower than most of the the nearby peaks, the panorama it affords is spectacular. Some of the surrounding peaks includes Mount Birdwood, Mount Smuts, The Fist, Mount Nestor and Mount Chester.

We will follow the Burstall Pass trail for about 3.5 km at which point we'll descend right down to the marsh area. Be prepared for creek and marsh crossing. It shouldn't be more than calf deep. Following the marsh/creek crossing we'll gain a col through a gully and work our way to the summit. It'll be mostly a scree slog with a 15 meter scrambling section near the summit.

I like to take long breaks at the summit (if conditions permit). I also travel at a low moderate pace and like to take breaks for snacks and photos.

In the event that the weather turns nasty (ie. snow), another scramble (up to moderate difficulty) or difficult hike will be selected in another area. If registered, please pay attention to your email for updates.

Please note that the coordinator has not done this trip before. Please allow time/patience for unforeseen circumstances.
