Distance: 17 kms Elevation Gain: 575 m (cumulative) Note: The coordinator has not done this trip before but wants to try it. Please allow time/patience for unforeseen circumstances. We will begin our hike by passing the beautiful Elbow Lake after about 30 minutes. Instead of remaining here, as many do, we will continue through the Elbow Valley where we will cross rolling, sparsely-treed meadows in search of our goal: Rae Lake The trail itself will begin along a road-trail through some meadows. After passing Elbow Lake, we will get some views of Piper Creek canyon and occasionally get a glimpse of the Elbow River. The trail will branch off and eventually end up following a cairned path to Rae Lake, at the foot of Mt. Rae. We will stop at the lake for lunch break before continuing around the shore to follow a looped routing that will join back with the road-trail we came up on. The trip promises many views of the neighbouring peaks, passage by a couple of lakes and exploration into one of the less commonly explored parts of the area. Ref: Where Locals Hike in the Canadian Rockies, Copeland, Trip 29, pg.164 PACE: We will ascend at a slow steady pace on steeper terrain and a moderate pace on gentler grades and going down, sticking together as a group. This is not a speed demon pace nor a slowpoke pace. | |||||||
