Itinerary: | |||||||
Exposure
is a Photography Festival running this month at various venues throughout Calgary,
Banff and Canmore (check link for actual
dates and times at each venue under Events). I have selected
four exhibits to visit today. We will walk between the galleries for a total distance of about 5 to 6 km.
We may stop for coffee partway. If time
permits we may do other walking or gallery
visits. Allot approximately 5 hours. Please be
flexible as to how our time is spent. We will meet at 11:15 AM in Eau Claire Market in the food court area at tables in front of the Subway restaurant. Our planned itinerary: Our next stop is Herringer Kiss Gallery 709 - A - 11 Avenue SW for Plane Space. “Plane Space” focuses on the patterns of architectural facades while still providing recognition to the intimate details they reflect; in turn, provoking an exploration on how these facades interact with us, and how their forms reflect the way we live. These photographs are printed onto brushed silver aluminum which gives the images the gleam and luster of an architectural facade while increasing their physical presence beyond one-dimensional imagery to actual object. The next stop is NewZones 730 11th Ave SW for Perception. There will be a reception from 2:00 to 4:00 today and I am aiming for us to be there during this time as the artists will be in attendance (and possibly refreshments). With the photograph at the core, “Perception” will explore artwork that is manipulated in many fashions: by way of hand with a selection of media, where photography becomes mixed with wax, paint or Plexiglas. Other artists use pinhole cameras or Polaroid film to achieve a specific effect, and some utilize digital means to create and alter the images, resulting in a different effect altogether. With all of these varying methods, it's up to the viewer to determine how the photos are created. The last planned stop is Masters Gallery 2115 4th St.SW for "Tuesday in New York". An analysis of fire escapes is the theme for this series, where John Dean gives definition to foreground and background in a compression of details and texture that assemble into these façades and divide themselves into repetitions. He composes the picture plane into a limited set of motifs that include metal staircases and their partnered shadows, allowing us the pleasure of the gaze to find the barest evidence reminding us that these are dwellings where people live in a major city. Reflections in windows carry hints of a lamp turned on in the hidden interior; the evidence of humanity cloistered away in these ordered geometrics. We will then head back to Eau Claire Market and the CTrain. I believe admission will be free or by donation but please be prepared to pay entrance fees. Please come dressed for spending time both indoors and out, for walking and for being on your feet for approx. 5 hours. Photo credit: John Dean | |||||||
