As it happens, your humble coordinator was not the only person who had wanted to come to Healy Pass for a year or two but was stopped by closures or fires. Several of us were delighted to finally have the opportunity and the timing was perfect! The meadows in both Simpson Pass and Healy Pass offered an explosion of wildflowers! A riot of colour! The weather was humid but not too hot and not too cold. We were teased by thunder and a few sprinkles at the apex of the route but that only added more sensory texture to the day. All agreed that taking the small Simpson Pass loop was well worth the added kms. In fact, the Healy Creek trail only gets interesting after where the loop rejoins it. We did the loop on the ascent and returned via the Healy Creek Trail. The loop has some steeper sections so it is a knee saver to do it in this direction. Currently access to the Monarch Ramparts is prohibited for the preservation of flora and fauna. Unfortunately, there were some hikers disregarding the signage. At Healy Pass we enjoyed views of Egypt Lake, Scarab Lake, and Pyramid Lake (and maybe another). On the descent we noted the tarns, at least four, that dot the meadows below the Monarch peak. It was a fantastic day!
